2. Moorland And Barranco Valley
After a demanding first day or two, the trail emerges from forest into heath and moorland before dropping into the dramatic Barranco Valley, beneath the sheer southern ice fields of Kibo, where it joins the Southern Circuit.
3. Alpine Desert Zone
From Barranco, the route follows the same path used by Machame and Lemosho climbers, crossing the Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble — before continuing across alpine desert toward Barafu Camp.
4. Arctic Zone And Summit Push
The final ascent from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak crosses steep scree and patches of snow and ice, with the summit attempt typically beginning around midnight to reach the crater rim and Uhuru Peak around sunrise. Descent follows the Mweka Route back through forest to the southern gate.
